The Book of Psalms

Psalm 138

Thankfulness to the LORD

Of David.

1I will praise You with all my heart, O LORD;
before the heavenly beings I will sing Your praise.

2 I will bow down toward Your holy temple,
and give thanks to Your name for Your love and Your faithfulness; for You have exalted Your name
and Your word above all things. 3 On the day I called out, You answered me;
You made me bold and courageous. 4 All the kings of the earth will praise You, O LORD,
when they hear the words of Your mouth. 5 They will sing of the ways of the LORD,
for great is the glory of the LORD. 6 Though the LORD is on High, yet He has regard for the lowly;
but the proud He knows from afar. 7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life; You stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
with Your right hand You save me. 8 The LORD will fulfil His purpose for me;
Your faithful love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the works of Your own hands.

About Psalms Chapter 138

Book V · Psalms 107–150 — Thanksgiving, pilgrimage, God’s word and praise

What happens

David praises God for answering prayer and magnifying His word and name. Though the LORD is exalted, He regards the humble, sustains His servant through trouble and will fulfil His purpose.

Why it matters

God’s greatness does not put Him beyond the reach of the lowly. Gratitude for answered prayer creates courage to trust His continuing work when dangers remain.
