The Book of Psalms

Psalm 126

God’s Rescue of the People of Zion

A Song of Ascents.

1WHEN the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dreamed.

2 Our mouths were filled with laughter,
and our tongues with shouts of joy. Then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.” 3 The LORD has done great things for us,
and we are filled with joy. 4 Restore our fortunes, O LORD,
like streams in the Negev. 5 Those who sow in tears
will reap with shouts of joy. 6 He who goes forth weeping,
bearing precious seeds to sow, will come back rejoicing,
carrying sheaves with him.

About Psalms Chapter 126

Book V · Psalms 107–150 — Thanksgiving, pilgrimage, God’s word and praise

What happens

The community remembers a restoration so wonderful that it felt like a dream, filled with laughter and singing. Still longing for complete renewal, it asks God to turn tears and sowing into joyful harvest.

Why it matters

Past deliverance nourishes prayer for unfinished restoration. The picture of sowing in tears encourages patient hope when faithful work is difficult and its fruit is not yet visible.

Key verse

“Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy.”
