The Book of Psalms

Psalm 47

God is King Over All of the Earth

For the director of music. A Psalm of the Sons of Korah.

1CLAP your hands, all you peoples;
shout to God with cries of joy.

2 For the LORD Most High is awesome;
the great King over all the earth! 3 He subdued peoples under us,
and nations under our feet. 4 He chose our inheritance for us,
the pride of Jacob, whom He loves.  Selah 5 God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
the LORD, amid the sounding of trumpets. 6 Sing praises to God, sing praises!
Sing praises to our King, sing praises! 7 For God is the King of all the earth;
sing a psalm of praise. 8 God reigns over the nations;
God is seated on His holy throne. 9 The nobles of the peoples are assembled,
the people of the God of Abraham. For the guardians of the earth belong to God;
He is greatly exalted.

About Psalms Chapter 47

Book II · Psalms 42–72 — Longing for God, deliverance and royal hope

What happens

All peoples are called to clap and sing because the Most High rules over the earth. God subdues nations, ascends amid shouts of joy and reigns upon His holy throne.

Why it matters

God’s kingship extends beyond Israel to every nation. Praise is therefore a public, universal response to His righteous authority, not merely a private expression of feeling.

Key verse

“For God is the King of all the earth; sing a psalm of praise.”

Psalm 47:7 · CELV
