The Book of Psalms

Psalm 23

The Psalm of the Good Shepherd

A Psalm of David.

1THE LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
2He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside the still waters.
3He restores my soul. He leads me in the paths of righteousness
for His name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil,
for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff,
they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy will follow me
all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the House of the LORD
forever.

About Psalms Chapter 23

Book I · Psalms 1–41 — Prayer, lament, trust and wisdom

What happens

The LORD is pictured as a shepherd who provides pasture, restores strength and guides along right paths. Even through death’s dark valley, His presence comforts; the image then turns to an honoured guest welcomed at God’s table.

Why it matters

God’s faithful care encompasses ordinary provision, danger and the hope of lasting fellowship. The psalm invites trust not because life is trouble-free, but because the Shepherd is present.

Key verse

“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.”
