The Book of Psalms

Psalm 4

The Safety of the Faithful

For the director of music. With
stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.

1ANSWER me when I call to You,
O God of my righteousness.

You have freed me from my afflictions;
have mercy on me and hear my prayer. 2 How long, O sons of men, will you turn my honour into shame?
How long will you love what is worthless, and seek after lies?  Selah 3 But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for Himself;
the LORD will hear when I call to Him. 4 In your anger do not sin;
when you are on your bed, reflect in your heart and be still.  Selah 5 Offer sacrifices in righteousness
and trust in the LORD. 6 Many are asking, “Who can show us anything good?”
Let the light of Your face shine upon us, O LORD. 7 You have put more joy in my heart
than when their grain and new wine abound. 8 I will lie down and sleep in peace,
for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.

About Psalms Chapter 4

Book I · Psalms 1–41 — Prayer, lament, trust and wisdom

What happens

David asks God to answer his prayer, rebukes those who pursue falsehood, and urges them to turn from anger to quiet trust. Despite widespread anxiety, he rejoices in God’s favour and lies down in peace.

Why it matters

The psalm contrasts anxious dependence on outward prosperity with the deeper security that God gives. It encourages honest prayer, self-examination and restful confidence in the LORD’s care.

Key verse

“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.”
