The Book of Psalms

Psalm 70

A Prayer for Deliverance

For the director of music. A Psalm of David. To bring to remembrance.

1MAKE haste, O God, to deliver me;
hurry to help me, O LORD!

2 Let those who seek my life
be put to shame and confusion; let those who desire to hurt me
be turned back and brought to disgrace. 3 Let those who say, “Aha! Aha!”
be turned back in shame. 4 But let all who seek You
rejoice and be glad in You; let all who love Your salvation say continually,
“God is very great!” 5 Yet I am poor and needy;
hasten to me, O God. You are my help and my deliverer;
O LORD, do not delay.

About Psalms Chapter 70

Book II · Psalms 42–72 — Longing for God, deliverance and royal hope

What happens

This urgent prayer asks God to hurry to the rescue of one who is poor and needy. The speaker calls for the frustration of those who seek his life and for joy among those who seek the LORD.

Why it matters

Sometimes the most faithful prayer is also the shortest. The psalm gives words to immediate distress while keeping the honour of God central to the request for help.

Key verse
